The great pandemic and public disgust have prompted death row states in the United States to reduce the number of executed convicted killers.

The unlucky 13 in pencil to die in 2022 are the lowest list in decades, continuing a long decline in the number of men and women put to death in electric chairs or by lethal injection.

More recently, Virginia – long a mainstay of the death penalty – has abandoned the ultimate punishment.

Still, other states, mostly in the south, have put the mower on the brakes but haven’t come to a complete stop.

This is the 2022 class.

411: Born to a crackhead mother, the 45-year-old was sentenced to death for the murder of two women in 2001 at a hotel in Del City, Oklahoma. His lawyers claim he suffers from a serious mental illness. Two of Grant’s brothers are also convicted killers. In 2010, Lenox Grant shot dead a seven-year-old boy and his father while Joseph Grant was convicted of second degree murder during a bar fight.

411: Smith was convicted of the 1989 triple murder of his ex-wife Judy Lynn Smith and his two sons from a previous marriage, Chad and Jason Burnett, in Nashville. He was sentenced to death for all three murders.

HAROLD NICHOLS (TENN) – JUNE 9

411: Harold Nichols, aka The Red-Headed Stranger, has been sentenced to death for the brutal sexual murder of Karen Pulley, 21. According to court records, he hit her on the head with a plank at least four times, causing skull fractures and brain damage. Nichols wants to die in the electric chair.

411: Coley’s trip on the stretcher follows the murder on January 3, 1997, in Toledo of 21-year-old Samar El-Okdi. The victim was found stabbed 33 times with a bite mark on his neck, with his watch and ring missing. DNA linked the convicted man to the crime.

KAREEM JACKSON (OHIO) – SEPT. 15

411: Jackson, 47, was sentenced to death for the Columbus murders on March 25, 1997 of two men he shot in the head so they wouldn’t go to the cops. The killer and four accomplices began to rob an apartment and things went off the rails, ending in a bloodbath. Jackson told an accomplice at the scene of the murder, “They know my name. I have to kill them.
