Greenwood Police Search for Escaped Inmate to Hospital | criminality

A man escaped custody Wednesday afternoon while being treated at a Greenwood hospital, police said.

Alexander Kade Lanier was being treated at Self Regional Medical Center on Wednesday after being arrested by Greenwood Police as part of a Tuesday night burglary and domestic violence investigation, said Jonathan Link, the Department of Public Information Officer. Greenwood Police.

At around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, Lanier escaped the police, who discovered a few minutes later that he was no longer in his hospital room, Link said. He didn’t have enough details to say how Lanier escaped custody or police surveillance, but officers have since searched near Self to locate him.

“I can’t think of the last time someone escaped our custody like this, but it’s very unfortunate,” said police chief TJ Chaudoin. “There are a lot of questions to ask, like why he wasn’t handcuffed, why he didn’t have shackles on his feet. There are several questions that must be asked to understand why he was not selected.

Chaudoin said Lanier was being treated in hospital after telling officers he had consumed an illegal substance. Hospital staff watched him after the treatment, and Chaudoin said a sworn officer was assigned to watch Lanier when he escaped. He said an investigation was underway to find out how Lanier escaped and whether the department’s policy was followed.

Lanier was last seen wearing a red hoodie and gray shorts. Chaudoin said that after Lanier’s escape he stole a vehicle from someone he knew who lived on Woodrow Avenue. Police are working with hospital security personnel to determine his whereabouts and locate the stolen car. Chaudoin said all investigators and his administrative staff were on the search, along with the SWAT team and the police department’s K9 unit.
