Authorities are holding a firearm in evidence that was discovered in an area where the search for Brian Laundrie was conducted.

According to Independent, Christophe Sacco discovered the weapon, which was wrapped in a plastic bag and attached to a rock with string, while fishing in Fort De Soto Park last week.

A spokesperson for the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said authorities placed the gun in the property and evidence after Sacco reported it. The gun was reportedly brought into the Florida Crime Information Center and the National Crime Information Center.

Sacco reportedly said the area was quieter than usual when he found the weapon. “Usually there are a whole bunch of people. What if a little kid finds it?” he said.

The news outlet noted that authorities had not hinted that the weapon was linked to the Laundrie case.

Laundrie’s skeletal remains were found in the Carlton Preserve on October 20 and he was identified through dental records. His initial autopsy was inconclusive and the remains were sent to a forensic anthropologist for further evaluation.

As previously stated by OKAY!, the lawyer of the Laundrie family Steven bertolino said the results of the forensic anthropologist’s examination are expected this month. He said before Fox News that they will likely have answers on the cause and time of Laundrie’s death in two to three weeks.

The saga began when Laundrie and Gabby Petito embarked on a summer road trip and returned home without her on September 1. The influencer was reported missing ten days later before her body was found on September 19 in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. The cause of his death was later revealed to be strangulation.

The 23-year-old was a person of interest in Petito’s case. An arrest warrant had been issued for the unauthorized use of a debit card.
