KCK man accused of being beaten to death

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City, Kansas man was charged Tuesday with beating a 24-year-old woman to death and assaulting a 4-year-old child.

Jose E. Escalante-Corchado, 29, has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, two counts of criminal action with a weapon and first-degree endangerment of the well-being of a child, according to a statement from the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.

The incident happened on Jan. 15, 2022, when officers from the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department were dispatched to the 7300 block of Wabash Avenue to conduct a wellness check, court records show.

After entering the residence, officers found the 24-year-old victim dead in a bathtub, the child with severe head trauma and blood throughout the main floor of the home.

The child is currently in critical condition.

A 911 call had come that day from the victim’s phone.

Agents found the imprint of a specific type of boot, and later found a matching pair of boots that belonged to Escalante-Corchado. Detectives also found Escalante-Corchado’s truck in the crime scene area.

“Surveillance video also showed a man in the victim’s residence area running south from the residence and then getting into a white truck which soon stopped at a gas station,” the statement said. “The surveillance video revealed that the man appeared to be a black-haired Hispanic male. The defendant told detectives it was he who was gassed.”

Escalante-Corchado told detectives he knew the victim and his daughter. He is being held without bail.
