Police arrested the suspect on Tuesday in a fatal shooting that sent a crowd to a party early Sunday morning to search for safety, McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said.
DeOtis Sanders-Gray, 24, of Waco, shot Scotty Eugene Stephens, 25, of Waco, shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday, during a party in an open area on Orchard Lane that followed a horseback ride , McNamara said.
When MPs arrived there was a large crowd and Stephens was on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head and injuries from a struck vehicle, he said. Stephens was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported that Sanders-Gray went to the party in camouflaged gear and carrying an AK-47 rifle and opened fire, hitting Stephens and several vehicles, McNamara said. Several people got into vehicles to flee, and one of the fleeing vehicles struck Stephens, he said.
Investigators believe Sanders-Gray targeted Stephens.
At the time of the shooting, Sanders-Gray was charged with three counts and was free on bail, McNamara said.
“That’s the sad thing, he should never have gone out on the streets,” McNamara said. “He shot him in cold blood.
Sanders-Gray was charged in September last year with aggravated assault, aggravated assault of a pregnant person and illegal possession of a firearm by a criminal. The indictment alleges that he shot a gun several times in the air and pointed it at a pregnant woman, then punched her in the face, causing her to fall backwards.
